Shop Pay Installments – FAQ
Shop Pay Installments allows customers to split their purchases into easy, manageable payments, online or in-store, with flexible plans and transparent rates starting from 0% APR. There are no hidden fees or late charges, and all transactions are processed securely through Affirm. Merchants receive full payment upfront, while customers enjoy a smooth and convenient checkout experience. Available for eligible stores and customers in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.
1. Are there any additional costs for customers?
Depending on the installment option chosen, interest rates between 0%–36% APR may apply (subject to country or regional regulations). Aside from applicable interest, there are no hidden charges or late fees.
2. Does using Shop Pay Installments affect a customer’s credit score?
Creating a Shop Pay Installments account does not impact a customer’s credit score. However, the following may influence their credit rating:
- Making a purchase
- Payment history with Affirm
- Credit utilization and credit history length
3. Are transaction fees refunded if I issue a refund?
No. The Shop Pay Installments transaction fee is non-refundable. When you process a refund, the payment is returned to the customer, but the fee is retained by Affirm.
4. What if a customer opens a dispute for an installment order?
If a dispute is opened, Affirm will email the store owner directly. You have 15 days to reply with supporting evidence. Affirm then resolves the dispute within another 15 days:
- If resolved in your favor → funds are returned to your account.
- If resolved in the customer’s favor → funds are returned to the customer.
There are no additional costs if the customer is refunded.
5. Can I change the price range available for Shop Pay Installments?
No. Installments are available for:
- $35–$30,000 USD/CAD (United States & Canada)

£50–£30,000 GBP (United Kingdom)
This includes discounts, shipping, and taxes.
Some orders may require a down payment at the time of checkout.
6. Can I choose which products qualify for Shop Pay Installments?
No. Shop Pay Installments automatically applies to all eligible products within the price range.
Gift cards and subscription products are excluded.
7. Can customers buy gift cards or subscription products with Shop Pay Installments?
Shop Pay Installments cannot be used for:
- Gift cards
- Subscription-based products
8. How can I assist customers with Shop Pay Installments issues?
If customers have questions about:
- Their loan, payment, or account → direct them to Affirm’s Shop Pay Help Center (for Canada, U.S., or U.K.)
- Shop Pay or the Shop app → share the guide on Paying in Installments with Shop Pay.
9. How do I get paid?
After capturing the payment, you’ll receive the full order amount within 1–3 business days, minus the Shop Pay Installments fee. Affirm handles all customer payments, and funds are deposited to the same bank account used for Shopify Payments.
10. What happens when a customer returns an item purchased via Shop Pay Installments?
- If the refund is less than the remaining balance → future payments are reduced.
- If the refund is more than the remaining balance → the difference is refunded to the original payment method.
Note: Interest already paid is non-refundable, as it represents the cost of borrowing.
11. What if I add an item to an existing Shop Pay Installments order?
An invoice for the outstanding balance will be created and sent to the customer. They must pay the new balance using a different payment method, as additional invoices aren’t supported.
12. Which payment methods are accepted?
Shop Pay Installments accepts:
- Credit cards (U.S. & Canada, except Capital One and Chase)

Customers opting for monthly payments must pay with a debit card.
16. Where is Shop Pay Installments available?
Currently available in:
- United States
- Canada
- United Kingdom
To access it:
- Your store must be based in one of these countries and meet Shopify Payments' eligibility requirements.
- Customers must have a billing address in the same region and be signed up for Shop Pay.
